me. I´m currently abroad and won´t make it back in
time for a summer job next year however the summer after
that I am very interested in getting a job on a ship of
somekind. (okay now you know just how much I now about
sailing.) Does anyone know where I could find a job
where they would be willing to teach me.......I know
chances are slim and none but I´d appriciate it. You
can PM me or just reply here. Thanks guys. Travel well.

All
depends on what kind of sailing you want to do. I know
nothing about the whole racing/yachting thing, so I'll
let someone more qualified field that aspect. If you're
at all interested in Tall Ships and history, there are a
number of old-style sailing ships that would probably
take you on as a volunteer until you learn the ropes.
It's not any way to make loads of cash or anything, but
it's a huge amount of fun, and can get really addictive.
I decided to try it for a summer after some backpacking
in Europe, and have pretty much been doing it since.
That was in 1999.... Anyway, check out the American Sail
Training Association (ASTA)'s website, if you're
interested. The Billet Bank is full of want ads for Tall
Ship sailors. Check it out at http://www.tallships.sailtraining.org/

I
would agree. Some of the sail-training associations need
people to cook, clean, organise etc. and do take on
novices. A friend sailes on TS Astrid and Velsheda with
no clue at first what to do. By the end of a summer she
was screaming at a skipper that if we didn't "Brace
Across" now, we could lose a yard (square-rigger).
It can be done. Kestrel's link looks good. Also, trawl
the net for sail training ship sites.
