Travel Insurance

This is a great thing!  You can be insured, not only for your health, but for theft, airfares, and many many other things.  Most companies include it all in one 12- month plan.  I am not affiliated in any way to any of these companies, and as prices may change, I can only stand behind the accuracy of this information for the day I looked it up - January 9, 2004.  I would highly recommend insurance in case something serious happens.  Know that minor things like hospital visits when you are sick are not what you get this for.  Since medical care is SO incredibly cheap in so much of the world, the deductible these insurance companies wouldn't make it worth declaring.  These policies are suited for that extreme circumstance that would cost hundreds, if not thousands of US dollars, such as medical evacuation, trip cancellation, baggage theft/loss, and life-critical illness or injury.  Plenty of people travel without insurance, because typical travel illnesses range from altitude sickness to malaria, and the local clinic fees for those (as serious as they may be) are negligible.  I got the cheapest one (Hostel World) and haven't used them yet, despite being hospitalized for AMS, and fracturing my knee - the visit fees were only a few dollars, while my insurance deductible is US$50 - a few months wages for locals of these countries!

Some sound advice from none other than the Lonely Planet:
"Some policies offer lower and higher medical-expense options but the higher ones are chiefly for countries like the USA which have extremely high medical costs.  Some policies specifically exclude 'dangerous activities', including scuba diving, motorcycling and even trekking.

You may prefer a policy which pays doctors or hospitals direct rather than you having to pay on the spot and claim later. If you have to claim later make sure you keep all documentation. Some policies ask you to call back (reverse charges) to a centre in your home country where an immediate assessment of your problem is made.

Check if the policy covers ambulances or an emergency flight home."
