Salt Mines, Poland
June 1, 2004
200Km of tunnels 500 meters underground. Very cool. One thing I didn't
expect was how clean the air was.
It was the most refreshing air I've ever breathed. The guide noted
that there was also a health clinic
down there where celebrities would come for a week just to breath the air.
This was our walk down into the mines.
There were all sorts of sculptures around the mines. Inspiration?
Everything was made out of salt, so when you see chandeliers, they're salt too!
This is a statue representation of how they dealt with the problem of explosions.
In excavating, they would also be releasing explosive gases. This gases
would rise to the ceilings.
To prevent buildup of explosive (and toxic) gases, they would intentionally
light a torch
and ignite any gases near the ceiling before it built up enough to be harmful.
An entire salt hall. Chandeliers, statues, the tiles on the floor; everything
was made of salt!
