Budapest, Hungary
May 8, 2004 - May 9, 2004

Well, I am sorry to report that Budapest was not particularly happening the days I was there. I had wanted to stay a few days, but after my first day, I just felt like the city had vacated before I got there. It was pretty dead. So all I had to look at was the buildings, which I became increasingly aware were in varying states of disrepair. I stayed in a fort which was cool, but the desk person ended up being one of the only people I spoke to - and he was pretty unhappy to be socializing I think, because he came across as rude. To top it all off, I caught the flu from someone at the Wien hostel and it was just kicking in when I got to Budapest. I decided to leave on the night train that second day, so I could at least give another full day of wandering. There was a big festival celebrating Buda in the park, so there are plenty of pics of that. It was interesting, and at least I saw some people!

Russian cars! I should write a little story about them when I get the chance. They're hilarious! And noisy...

My fort bedroom. Great view! ...and rats in the walls......

Hungarian flags at the Palace

Cool gates into Palace

Around old Buda

This was interesting. I have no idea what the story is. They were not asking for money, or begging. They were just hanging out. Probably training their birds off the cliff.

I'd bet that's an endangered eagle, and probably illegal to own in the states

This is something I've seen in Eastern Europe. They don't really use metal scaffolding. They just build scaffolding out of wood and nails like the old days.
In Asia, it's bamboo, and rope!!

Something I thought was sad in Budapest, was that they have some amazing buildings.  Some with ornate painted
details on the front.  But they have almost all been allowed to fall into ruin.  Now that they're in the EU, their economy
is stabilizing, and I hope someone sees the value in restoring these beautiful buildings.

These buildings would be SO beautiful, and worth a fortune if they weren't falling apart! Sad.

And a castle in the main park

This was the festival that was going on in the park

You'd never see this in the states. Totally unsafe by our standards. Leading kids through a fire with
gas masks - a real sell for the fire department in Budapest. I wish I could have gone.

Rides in a fire engine ladder

And there was a women's marathon going on too

...But I had to go, and get on the train
