Yangshuo,
China
August 29, 2004 - September 3, 2004
Yangshuo is touted to be the backpacker Mecca in China. It certainly was lao wai-friendly, but I didn't find it to be teaming with foreigners as much as expected. Yang Jia and I both loved this town. It was everything you dream China to be. Strange cliff-like mountains covered in greenery and temples. Meandering jiang (rivers), and classic Chinese architecture. It's a great place to just hang out in town, and people-watch, or to go out and have some adventures in a variety of caves, mountains, and temples catering to backpackers.

At most bus stops and train stations there are people trying
to get you to stay at their hotel. It's hit and miss, but this time we
lucked out. The pictures the guy showed us convinced us to at least take
a look. Well, for $5 we got this cute little cabin-like room. It
was a great deal, and even included free internet use!

This was the type of bamboo boat everyone uses in this part of China.
Sometimes it's your only option to cross a river were a bridge hasn't yet been
built.
I don't like taking pictures of these people, but just this once, while no one
was looking.
You can't imagine the deformities in China. This guy was lucky compared
to others I've seen.
Most are children, probably because they die of complications before they grow
to adulthood.

I learned about this in Honduras, but here's proof. Most types of oranges
have to be
treated with cold temperatures to achieve an actual orange color. They
are green
otherwise. Florida oranges are the only exception I know of.
